Priorities

Southfield shaped Amani Johnson — and now he’s fighting every day to strengthen Southfield Public Schools for the next generation.

As a lifelong Southfield resident, proud district graduate, and six-year member of the Southfield Public Schools Board of Education, Amani believes our schools should deliver strong academics, safe and modern facilities, and real opportunity for every student.

Improve Student Achievement & Raise Test Scores

Every Southfield student deserves the tools and support to succeed.

Amani’s top academic priority is improving student achievement and increasing reading and math scores across the district. That means supporting evidence-based instruction, investing in targeted interventions and tutoring, using data to identify where students need more support, and making sure every classroom has the resources students need to thrive.

Amani believes academic success starts early, requires strong partnerships with families, and must stay focused on preparing every student for long-term success.

Deliver Safe, Modern Schools in Every Neighborhood

Students learn best in buildings that are safe, comfortable, and built for the future.

In 2022, Southfield voters approved a $345 million bond to modernize every school building across the district over the next decade. Amani is committed to making sure those projects are completed responsibly, transparently, and with strong accountability to taxpayers.

That includes addressing long-overdue infrastructure needs, improving classroom spaces, and ensuring every student has access to the kind of facilities they deserve.

Lead on Sustainability & Save Taxpayer Dollars

Good stewardship means planning ahead.

As Chair of the Sustainability Committee and Construction Committee, Amani has led efforts to adopt districtwide policies on waste reduction, sustainable facilities, and smarter building design.

Under this Board’s leadership, Southfield Public Schools has also secured 20 electric school busses.

He is working to move Southfield toward 100% clean energy—to protect our environment, improve student health, and lower long-term energy costs so more taxpayer dollars can be reinvested directly into classrooms.
